Round 5 summary

Pavel Eljanov played very risky as white against Nils Grandelius. He took a pawn at the expense of exposing his king in the middle of the board. Considering he also had spent most of his time it looked promising for Grandelius. But he didn’t find anything decisive, and in the end most pieces got exchanged and a draw was agreed.

Baadur Jobava played the Petroff defence as black against Erik Blomqvist. They followed a game that Jobava had played previously against Anand, but at move 13 Blomqvist played Bb3 instead of Anand’s 13.Ne5. Jobava defended very well until 21...f6 which he wasn’t happy with afterwards. He thought Blomqvist should have played 22.Rxe6 Nxe6 23.Bxh6 with very good compensation for the sacrificed exchange. Instead Blomqvist retreated with his rook, which led to exchanges and a draw.

In the game Harika Dronavalli and Nigel Short an endgame was fairly quickly reached, offering no big winning chances for either side. After 40 moves a draw was agreed after a repetition of moves in an equal rook endgame.

The first place in the tournament was shared between Nils Grandelius and Baadur Jobava, both on 3 points. Erik Blomqvist and Pavel Eljanov got shared third at 2.5 points, while Harika Dronavalli and Nigel Short ended on 2 points.

Round 4 summary

Nils Grandelius played the English opening as white against Erik Blomqvist who defended with a hedgehog setup. Blomqvist had virtually equalised when he played the inexact 23...h6 followed by the blunder 24...Rxc8 which allowed the strong 25.Qg4. After that black had no defence against the white attack. Grandelius had no problems to win the game.

The game between Nigel Short and Pavel Eljanov became very complicated. Short sacrificed a piece in the 20th move, forcing Eljanov to march with his king from e8 to a6. Short couldn't find anything decisive in the time scramble and when Eljanov managed to exchange the queens he got a winning endgame. Maybe it had been better for Short to go for his far advanced g-pawn at an earlier stage instead of the black king directly. Future analysis will tell.

Baadur Jobava played a surprisingly harmless opening against Harika Dronavalli. He seemed to get some chances in a double knight endgame but chose a doubtful continuation and after 40 moves they agreed to a draw.

Before the last round Jobava and Grandelius is half a point ahead of Eljanov and Blomqvist. We are awaiting an exciting finish!

Round 3 summary

The top two seeded players in the tournament played against each other in the third round. Pavel Eljanov showed his aggresive intents by playing 1.e4 and Baadur Jobava accepted the challenge. He chose to defend with a sharp Sicilian variation known as the "Dragadorf" as it's a combination of the Dragon and the Najdorf. Eljanov quickly got a promising position but in the time scramble he let it slip and for a while it looked like Jobava got the upper hand. In move 40 he made a big mistake by allowing Eljanov to sacrifice his rook on h5 and it was pure luck that he managed to simplify into a queen ending with a pawn down that he could hold.

Nigel Short challenged Nils Grandelius theoretical knowledge when he allowed Nils to play the feared Marshall defence in the Ruy Lopez. Grandelius got good compensation for the sacrificed pawn but Short played patiently and when he managed to exchange queens it became apparent that Nils would have a difficult defence ahead of himself in the endgame. He managed this very well except for a big blunder in move 62 which gave Short the opportunity to win immediately in move 64 with Re1 that would have led to an exchange of rooks, making one of his two passed pawns unstoppable. Short however missed this opportunity and the game ended in a draw shortly thereafter.

Erik Blomqvist was very well prepared with black against Harika Dronavalli. In a classical Sicilian defence he played the first 16 moves quickly while Dronavalli spent a lot of time analyzing the variations. She did this well, but a big blunder in move 28 lost her the exchange and later the game.

After three rounds Jobava and Blomqvist is in a shared lead with two points. Short and Grandelius follows half a point behind. In the fourth round we are looking forward to the interesting Swedish duel between Grandelius and Blomqvist.

Round 2 summary

Baadur Jobava played the Trompovsky against Nigel Short, just like he did against Nils Grandelius the day before. Short chose an ambitious continuation where he exchanged one of white's bishops at the expense of a weakend kingside. Soon after Jobava also exchanged his second bishop for Shorts second knight. The game got very complicated but with a strong exchange sacrifice Jobava took the initiative. Despite a cunning defence by Short, he didn't manage to save the game.

Nils Grandelius tried to surprise Hakira Dronavalli with an unusual variation in the Sicilian defence. The strategy didn't turn out well; instead black got the upper hand after the opening thanks to her bishop pair. Once Nils Grandelius managed to solve his problems he made a blunder, 35.R2d6, which Dronavalli didn't exploit. Had she found the continuation 35...Bb5 36.Re7 Rhe8 37.Rxe8 Bxe8 she would have won a piece because of white's first rank weakness. Instead it went into an endgame with opposite colored bishops that Grandelius could easily hold.

Pavel Eljanov played very ambitious against Erik Blomqvist with black in the French Defence. He kept the king in the centre and advanced with his king side pawns while at the same time trying to use the c-file on the queen side. When Blomqvist had to give the white squared bishop for a knight it looked like Eljanov had an okay position, but in the time scramble he got problems with his king and ended up with a misplaced rook on h6. After move 40, Blomqvist had a winning position with an extra pawn in a double rook endgame which he won easily.

After two rounds four players have 1 point. Jobava is in the lead with 1.5 points and Eljanov is a bit surprisingly trailing behind with 0.5 points. In the third round Eljanov will have the chance to even things out as he is playing with white against Jobava.
